Senior Director & Head of Frontier Policy & Public Affairs, Google DeepMind
Owen leads Google DeepMind’s policy and public affairs work globally, working with governments to help them understand, use and govern advanced AI so that countries can accelerate beneficial and responsible use of AI.
His team leads the GDM’s government partnerships program, which sees GDM partner with leading AI countries to fast track AI adoption across the public sector and strategically important sectors and advance security and preparedness for transformative AI. Owen also leads GDM’s work to shape regulation and governance frameworks in the US, UK, EU and globally.
He also serves as a Board Member at the Frontier Model Forum, an industry group of leading AI labs advancing best practice for testing and mitigating AI risks. Prior to joining GDM Owen worked at Microsoft for 11 years in a number of roles across the UK, US and globally, including developing Microsoft’s frontier AI policy team in the Office of Responsible AI. He cofounded the Aspen Institute’s NextGeneration Network of young leaders and was a Term Member at the Council on Foreign Relations.
