Ditchley's September conference in the US focuses on Indo-Pacific strategy
Ditchley’s September conference was entitled Indo-Pacific Strategy 2025: how can the US and its allies deter China from war, increase resilience, and protect economic growth? and addressed the strategic challenges posed by an expanding China amid a period of significant geopolitical flux.
A profound sense of urgency underpinned the discussions, which were held in partnership with American Ditchley at the Greentree Estate on Long Island in New York, with participants agreeing that intervention is needed now to prevent a further deterioration of the security and economic landscape.
A central theme was the challenge of formulating a coherent allied strategy at a time when the United States is moving fast and breaking things in an attempt to redefine its place in the world. With the Trump administration viewing alliances through a transactional and economic lens, allies are increasingly developing strategies to de-risk from US unpredictability. This has shifted the onus onto allies and partners to enhance coordination, increase burden-sharing, and build resilience independently of, but not excluding, Washington.
Discussions highlighted that the primary threat from China may not be a direct military invasion of Taiwan, but rather a campaign of cyber-enabled economic warfare targeting critical sectors like communications, energy, and finance.
