The new Fourth Estate revisited: how can we strengthen the news and information landscape in advance of the likely tough challenges of 2024?

A Ditchley conference in collaboration with the MacArthur Foundation

This Ditchley conference, held in collaboration with the MacArthur Foundation, explored the shifting media landscape and the foundational challenges facing news organisations as a source of trustworthy information, particularly in advance of a major global election year. Participants debated the role of journalism in a democracy, with some arguing for an active, democracy-protecting stance, while others advocated for strict impartiality, rigorous reporting, and clear separation between reporting and opinion. Crucially, there was a consensus that public trust in journalism is currently in crisis and that rebuilding this trust is essential for bolstering both the profession and the foundation of democracy. Discussions highlighted the significant role of local news in re-establishing credibility by engaging communities and increasing media literacy to counter disinformation. Furthermore, the rapid development of Artificial Intelligence presents both risks, like copyright issues, and opportunities, such as increasing efficiency in translation, 'versioning' stories for diverse audiences, and identifying deep fakes. The general feeling was that news organisations must embrace experimentation and new technology, including platforms like TikTok, to adapt to evolving news consumption habits and effectively engage younger generations. The event brought together media leaders, representatives from journalism-focused foundations, and security and news decision-makers from major tech platforms.
