Reporting the Second Trump Presidency: what are the implications of a second Trump presidency for the news media around the world, & how can the news media adapt to changing audience preferences & political environments?

This first Anchor Event of Ditchley’s 2025 Media Programme will reflect on both what President Donald Trump’s win tells us about the evolving news media, as well as how it might shape the global media landscape in the four years ahead. In this discussion, we will consider three core challenges: 1) Trust in the media: what does President Trump’s approach to winning, and his evident success, tell all news media about how to rebuild trust in a distributed media landscape, and what lessons can be learned from insurgent and emerging media? 2) The role of tech platforms: when those that control platforms become more overtly political, what are the implications of this for news delivery and the media ecosystem, and how should the news media react? 3) Global impact: what are the implications of a second Trump presidency for the rest of the world outside of the US? What does it mean for what is considered newsworthy and how politicians are held to account, and which regions are likely to be most affected?
