What does geopolitics today mean for business tomorrow?
This conference on geopolitics and business convened a diverse group of key stakeholders and leaders from industry, government, and think tanks across technology, finance, consulting, and automotive sectors, with representatives from the UK, the US, the EU, Australia, and Canada, to discuss the profound intersection of economic and security objectives. The discussions focused on navigating a complex global environment marked by the Ukraine war's disruption of supply chains , the geopolitical tension and economic competition between the US and China , and the overarching threat of climate change. Acknowledging that a degree of decoupling and derisking from China is inevitable , panellists emphasised the critical need for policy clarity to enable businesses to make necessary, hard choices. Industrial policy has emerged as a key lever to address these issues , leading to a consensus on the need for a stronger, structured dialogue and symbiosis between governments and businesses to devise effective, honest solutions. Other key themes included the importance of international alliances to foster economic security , the challenges of bureaucratic processes hindering the transition to cheap renewable energy , and the evolving value of a human being amidst the exponential growth of technologies like AI. The discussions also highlighted the need for early, small steps to set in train greater change and for an honest assessment of the inflationary impact of altering supply chains.
