Does older mean poorer? What will demographic change mean for economic prosperity and social cohesion in developed economies?
Convening in Montebello, QC, Canada
This conference brought together diverse perspectives on demographic change in developed economies to explore its implications for economic prosperity and social cohesion. Participants acknowledged that living longer and increased female participation in the workforce are positive developments, but that the goal should be to live healthier for longer. The discussions addressed philosophical challenges and policy implications, with particular focus on three potential solutions: technology, migration, and community. While technology was seen as a way to increase longevity and aid with care, there was concern over the ethical implications and growing digital inequality. Migration was not considered a simple solution, as it comes with high costs for integration and can fuel populist politics. Ultimately, fostering resilient and intergenerational communities was identified as the most promising approach to addressing challenges such as loneliness and a strained social contract. The conference concluded that demographic decline is a complex, intersecting issue that will increasingly demand the attention of policymakers.
