Ditchley-Lumina Summit: Redesigning Higher Education for the 21st Century
From all sides of politics, in the US and across the developed world, there are voices questioning whether tertiary education after the age of 16 is delivering for those who matter most - students. Young people are saddled with spiralling debt for credentials which don’t necessarily offer the jobs they expected. A generation was urged by tech companies and many others to learn coding, and many are now graduating from computer science into unemployment. AI offers to unlock personalised tuition. But for some, it threatens to replace the communal and civic building aspects of tertiary education with siloed learning. And in offering easy answers, risks robbing a generation of the skills for self-directed decision making. This summit will provide an opportunity to discuss how we should now think about the skills individuals will need in a world disrupted by technology, and the specifics of how education providers in the US can deliver those in a range of ways to meet the needs of different learners.
