The changing nature of the corporation: how can corporations in democratic societies best adapt to contemporary domestic, international and technological pressures?
This Ditchley conference, held in coordination with American Ditchley, explored the evolving nature of corporations in democratic societies and how they can best adapt to contemporary pressures. Participants considered how the interconnectedness of economic and security issues is making the pursuit of growth more complex, a mission both governments and corporations share. The discussion also addressed how companies' interactions with governments might be changing and how to best manage these shifts. The conference also debated the integration of economic and security strategies, and how governments could better inform and consult with companies on these strategies. Key topics included the challenges and trade-offs of geopolitical competition, particularly with China and Russia, and how to manage these relationships going forward. Domestically, there was heated debate on corporate purpose, with some arguing for a return to profit-driven goals and others highlighting the need for sustainable growth that aligns with stakeholder values. The summary notes that participants felt there was "a huge amount of wood to chop" in the relationship between corporations and the state, but also saw opportunities for collaboration.
